November 22, 2021 | Volleyball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State senior Deja Robinson has been selected as the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week following the Bulldogs' road sweep over Arkansas this past weekend in Fayetteville.
Â
This marks the second weekly honor of Robinson's career and the first time this season she has earned a share of the SEC's Defensive Player of the Week award. Robinson posted a team-high 16 total blocks and averaged 2.00 blocks per set defensively to help Mississippi State extend the SEC's longest winning streak to 12 matches with a pair of wins at Arkansas this weekend.
Â
"I am so incredibly proud of Deja," head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "She has been working hard on her blocking and we saw that hard work pay off this weekend. Deja is a vital part of our team's success and it makes me really happy and proud for her to earn this recognition."
Â
Her efforts at the net led to her breaking the single-season Mississippi State record (Originally set in 1992) for block assists with 126 on the campaign. Robinson began the weekend by totaling 7.0 blocks and followed that performance by tying her season-high with 9.0 total blocks on Sunday to complete the road sweep over the Razorbacks. Robinson averaged 2.31 points per set to help Mississippi State set a new school record with 24 total wins on the season.
Â
Following this weekend's sweep over Arkansas, Mississippi State is ranked No. 24 in the latest AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll after posting a 24-5 overall record and a 15-2 mark in SEC play.
Â
The Dawgs return home to close out the regular season against Auburn at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26 at The Griss in Starkville. Admission is free for all home volleyball matches with gates opening one hour prior to first serve.
