Men's Tennis Announces Spring Schedule
November 01, 2021 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Fresh off a top 15 finish in last year, Mississippi State and head coach Matt Roberts are set for another challenging spring slate of men's tennis action in 2022.
Â
The Bulldogs will be vying for their 11th straight appearance in the NCAA Championships in the spring with at least 16 home matches scheduled at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre and the Rula Tennis Pavilion.
Â
"We are looking forward to our 2022 spring schedule and excited to have fans in the new Rula indoor tennis pavilion," Roberts said. "With our newly added indoor facility, we are able to host a high-level non-conference portion of our schedule. It is also a great opportunity to be able to host the first two rounds of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, with the goal being to advance to the national indoor final site in Seattle, Washington. All of our home matches in January and February will be played indoors and once we start the SEC portion in March, we will play outdoors at Pitts if the weather is above 50 degrees."
Â
MSU opens its spring schedule six straight home matches starting with a doubleheader against Tennessee Tech on Jan. 14. The Bulldogs will continue their January homestand with Florida State (16), Middle Tennessee State (23), UAB (23) and the ITA Kickoff Weekend (29).
Â
Mississippi State will host a doubleheader with Memphis and North Alabama on Feb. 3 before hitting the road for the first time to TCU on Feb. 11. National Indoors will be in Seattle Washington from Feb. 18-21 and then the Bulldogs are back home for another twinbill featuring Jackson State and Jacksonville State on Feb. 27.
Â
MSU will have home court advantage in its first two Southeastern Conference matches hosting defending SEC Tournament champion Tennessee on March 4 and Georgia two days later. The Bulldogs then have four consecutive road trips before returning home to face Alabama on March 25.
Â
Mississippi State hosts in-state rival Ole Miss on April 3 and closes out the regular season at home against Vanderbilt (April 15) and Kentucky (April 17).
Â
The Bulldogs will be challenged by two straight weeks on the road from March 11-20 when they square off against LSU (11), Texas A&M (13), South Carolina (18) and defending NCAA and SEC regular season champion Florida (20).
MSU also treks to Auburn on April Fool's Day and also Arkansas on April 8. The Bulldogs will later travel to Athens, Georgia for the SEC Championships on April 20-24.
Â
"Our goal is to continue to develop each individual in our program so that they can become a successful professional player, and we feel this schedule gives them excellent structure to compete and grow," Roberts said. "It is also important to our team to stay inside the top 16 in the nation so that we can host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament. We look forward to seeing everyone out at Rula and Pitts for the Spring 2022 dual-match season."
Â
Mississippi State brings back seven players from last year's 18-10 team that finished 15th in the country. The Bulldogs will add newcomer Bautista Vilicich to the mix in January on a roster that features second team All-SEC selection Florian Broska and 2021 ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-SEC honoree Nemanja Malesevic.
Â
Broska (27) and Malesevic (36) are currently among the top 100 singles players in the ITA Division I Preseason Rankings along with Davide Tortora (56) and Alberto Colas (92). Broska is also ranked sixth nationally in doubles play along with partner Gregor Ramskogler.
