October 03, 2021 | Men's Golf
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After its last tournament was canceled due to weather, Mississippi State's men's golf team is ready to compete at the Fighting Irish Classic on Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana. State's tee time is set at 7:30 a.m. CT.
Â
The 14-team field will get started with 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 4 before Tuesday's final round at the par-70, 7,023-yard course. Live stats will be available via Golfstat.
Â
"We are excited to get back and compete after our last event got canceled," Head Coach Dusty Smith said, "I know our guys have been putting in the time and effort to be the most prepared for this upcoming opportunity. Our focus will be on living up to our standard and making sure our mindset is focused on expectations, discipline, strategy and staying in the present moment. That is what it takes to have an elite mindset."
Â
Mississippi State returns to the Fighting Irish Classic after competing there previously in 2019. That year saw the Bulldogs post their lowest third-round score in program history (268) on their way to a ninth-place finish.
Â
State will be competing against host Notre Dame, Colorado, Washington, Oregon State, and five other teams from across the country.
Â
The MSU lineup will include senior Ford Clegg, junior Hunter Logan, senior Ben Nelson, freshman Jay Nimmo and sophomore Loïc Ettlin. Sophomore Austin Vukovits will also be playing as an individual.
Â
Clegg currently leads the team with a 71.67 stroke average. Clegg was State's best performer at the 2021 Carmel Cup where he finished tied for 17th.
Â
Logan, a Mississippi native, posted 12 birdies throughout three rounds in the season-opening tournament at Pebble Beach.
Â
Nelson shot 3-under 69 in his first round of the season at Pebble Beach and finished tied for 20th at the Carmel Cup.
Â
Nimmo will make his second career start for the Bulldogs. In his collegiate debut at the Carmel Cup, he shot a 1-under 71 in the middle round.
Â
Ettlin played in eight tournaments during his freshman season for the Bulldogs and shot a low round of 67. This will be his second career start.
Â
In the 2020-21 season, Vukovits played in three events, all as an individual. During the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship (3/26-28/21), he carded three birdies in the second round.
