October 29, 2021 | Men's Golf
LOXLEY, Ala. – The Mississippi State men's golf program returns to the Steelwood Collegiate to conclude its 2021 fall season. The two-day competition will take place from October 30-31 at the Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Alabama.Â
Â
The Bulldogs look for another exceptional performance at the par-72, 7,096-yard course as defending champions of the Steelwood Collegiate. In 2019, Mississippi State led after every round and took home the hardware with a stellar team score of 845, 19-under par.
Â
"We are excited for our final opportunity this fall," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We are in our process of becoming the best team we can possibly be, and this week will be another great chance for us to continue to build something special."
Â
Seven Bulldogs will make the trip to Alabama including Birmingham-native Ford Clegg along with Hunter Logan and Jay Nimmo, who have all appeared in every team event this fall. Pedro Cruz Silva and Loïc Ettlin also join the lineup.
Â
Austin Vukovits and Ben Nelson will play as individuals for Mississippi State.Â
Â
In his 2019 appearance at the Steelwood Collegiate, Clegg won the individual title with a 10-under performance. Clegg currently leads the Bulldogs this season with a 70.83 stroke average.
Â
Logan, Nimmo, Cruz Silva, and Ettlin are all returning from SEC Match Play two weekends ago. Nimmo made a grand debut in match play going 3-1, while Logan and Cruz Silva each won two matches. Ettlin gained a win facing Missouri at SEC Match Play.
Â
Earlier this month, Nelson and Vukovits competed at the Fighting Irish Tournament, Vukovits playing as an individual. Both Bulldogs rounded out the competition tied with each other at 220 for the tournament.Â
Â
"I think it's important to carry some positive momentum into the off season," Smith stated. "Our goal this week is to play to our standard and to have an elite mindset. If we are successful doing that, everything else will take care of itself."
Â
The 14-team field consists of UAB, Cincinnati, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Missouri, North Alabama, Rice, Rutgers, South Alabama and Wisconsin.Â
Â
The Bulldogs are slated to play two rounds Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. CT. MSU will return at the course for 18 holes on Sunday, 7:40 a.m. CT start on Holes 1 and 10.Â
