Jackson Earns Spot on Cheryl Miller Award Watch List
October 27, 2021 | Women's Basketball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball's Rickea Jackson has earned a place on the 2022 Cheryl Miller Award Preseason Watchlist, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.
Â
This is Jackson's second-consecutive appearance on the preseason watch list for the Cheryl Miller Award, given to the nation's best small forward. The Detroit, Mich. native was named one of 10 finalists for the award last season and on Tuesday earned Preseason All-SEC First Team honors in a vote by the League's 14 head coaches.
Â
Jackson is coming off an impressive sophomore season where she earned WBCA All-America Honorable Mention accolades and was a member of the WBCA All-Region II team.
Â
As a sophomore, Jackson led Mississippi State in scoring at 14.9 points per game and finished third on the team in both rebounds per game (4.4) and assists per game (2.0). Jackson scored at least 15-points in 11 contests last season and eclipsed the 20-point mark in three different outings. Her best performance of the year came at home against Troy when she scored 30-points on 11-of-20 shooting, including 6-for-10 from three.
Â
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds, which will open on Friday, Oct. 29. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2022 Cheryl Miller Small Forward of the Year Award will be narrowed to 10 and then in late February to just five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.
Â
The 2022 Cheryl Miller Award winner will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award, in addition to the Men's Starting Five.
Â
On Monday, Mississippi State's Myah Taylor and Anastasia Hayes were named to the Nancy Lieberman Award preseason watch list, honoring the nation's top point guards.
Â
