Women’s Golf Completes Round One of The Ally
October 25, 2021 | Women's Golf
West Point, Miss. – Mississippi State women's golf opened play at The Ally from Old Waverly Golf Club on Monday. The Bulldogs recorded a first round score of 3-over (291) to finish the day in ninth place.
"It is always really fun to play at home in a competitive atmosphere," head coach Charlie Ewing said. "I think that is something that the team really enjoys as well. You could tell on the first tee this morning that everyone was excited to have our home crowd around us and to be able to play on a familiar golf course that we love so much. It is always really nice to hear from the opposing teams, players and coaches that they love our home course."
In her home debut, freshman Julia Lopez Ramirez is leading the Bulldogs after round one. Lopez Ramirez holed six birdies to finish round one tied for 15th with a score of 1-under (71). The six birdies in the first round were the third-most by any player on Monday.
Hannah Levi, Valeria Mendizabal and Lauren Miller are in a tie for 21st after carding an even-par score of 72 in the first round. Graduate Lauren Miller carded the fourth most birdies through the first day with five while junior Hannah Levi sunk the second most pars through the first day with 14.
Redshirt senior Blair Stockett carded a score of 1-over (73) for the day to finish tied for 33rd and junior Abbey Daniel finished tied for 49th through the first day with a score of 3-over (75).
In a five-way tie for 62nd, sophomore Jarutrawee Khotchagrai and junior Ashley Gilliam both finished the first day with a score of 6-over (78). Freshman Ana Pina Ortega rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs competing individually with a score of 8-over (80).
"Everyone had their moments today," Ewing said. "Across the board, people had some really good stretches. We had probably more good stretches of really good golf than mistakes. Our mistakes are a little bit too big right now to really turn in rounds that we want to turn in. Mistakes are going to happen. We cannot expect anyone to be perfect. The better that we limit our mistakes and the more we keep things steady, we are going to be able to capitalize on the good golf that we have been playing."
The Bulldogs will return to the Old Waverly Golf Club on Tuesday to compete in the second round of The Ally. State will be paired with Auburn and LSU and will tee off on Hole 1 between 9:00-9:40 a.m. CT.
