Bulldogs Travel To Face No. 10 Tennessee
October 14, 2021 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Two of the SEC's top defenses will meet in Knoxville on Friday night when Mississippi State's soccer team travels to meet No. 10 Tennessee. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network+.
MSU (3-6-3, 1-4-1 SEC) and Tennessee (12-1-0, 5-1-0 SEC) are two of four SEC teams with a goals against average of less than 1.00 this season. However, the Lady Vols have committed the third-most fouls in the league (133).
Tennessee opened the year with seven straight victories and did not allow a goal in non-conference play. The Lady Vols' lone loss came in a 3-1 decision at Arkansas that saw the end of their 633-minute shutout streak.
"We go into a really tough stretch here at the end, but we're embracing that challenge and taking it one game at a time," head coach James Armstrong said. "The girls and ourselves feel we can give anybody a good game on our day, and we can compete with the best of them."
Three of MSU's final four SEC opponents are at the top of the conference standings and are ranked in the latest United Soccer Coaches' poll. The Bulldogs will look to end Tennessee's five-match winning streak and pick up their first victory against a top-10 team since defeating the then-No. 8 Lady Vols in 2006.
"They are the most-athletic team we will have faced so far," Armstrong added. "They are scoring lots of goals and conceding very few. Their transition, particularly offensively, is very fast. They've got a lot of depth, so they're going to be a real test going forward, but I think we can cause them some problems on the other side of the ball."
State has played the opponent tightly in every nearly match this season with just one of its losses coming by two or more goals. That has been a hallmark of the Armstrong era as MSU has just eight multi-goal losses since 2019 in his tenure. In the six years prior to his arrival, MSU averaged five losses by two or more goals per season.
The Bulldogs return home on Thursday, Oct. 21 to host Texas A&M at 6 p.m. CT. State's penultimate home match will air on SEC Network+.
