January 07, 2021 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – A National Player of the Year candidate, Mississippi State's Rickea Jackson was named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Watch List on Wednesday, announced the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2020-21 season thus far, the list comprises of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor. Jackson is one of nine selections from the SEC on the list, marking the most from any conference in the country.
The sophomore forward leads the team in scoring with 17.4 points per game on 42-percent shooting. Jackson owns seven double-digit scoring efforts this season, highlighted by the second 30-point performance of her career in a win against Troy. She is also averaging 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. She posted multiple assists in five games on the year.
In an effort to become a more effective scorer from beyond the arc, Jackson has nearly matched her total threes made from last year (13) through eight games this season (12). She ranks second on the team in 3-pointers this year and is knocking down the long ball at a 34 percent clip. In her performance against Troy, she finished with a career-high six threes and helped State post an MSU-record 18 treys in the contest.
The Detroit, Mich., native also named a National Player of the Year candidate for both the Naismith Trophy and the Wade Trophy, along with teammate Jessika Carter. She earned a spot on the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award preseason watch list and was also tabbed preseason first team All-SEC by the league coaches and preseason All-SEC by the media.
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2021 John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's. Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.
Up next, Mississippi State will travel to Florida for a matchup with the Gators on Thursday night. The game will tip at 5 p.m. CT and will be streamed live on SEC Network+ and the MSU Radio Network.
