MSU Men’s Tennis Goes 2-0 With Two Shutouts To Open 2021

STARKVILLE - It was a windy and chilly day outside, but inside it was hot as the Mississippi State men's tennis team fired shots to shut out both Bellarmine and North Alabama in an indoor twinbill to begin the 2021 campaign.
MSU (2-0) ousted Bellarmine (0-1) 7-0 and North Alabama (0-1) 7-0 at State's Rula Tennis Pavilion, the match against the Knights representing the first-ever dual match played in the facility. The Bulldogs are now 9-1 in season openers since 2012.
MSU 7, Bellarmine 0
State got out to a roaring start in doubles against Bellarmine Friday as the Bulldog duo of Nemanja Malesevic and Stedman Strickland cruised over Emil Berglund and Michael Staff 6-1 on court 3. The 47th-ranked Bulldog pair of Alberto Colas and Gregor Ramskogler triumphed over Ian Deiters and Paul Reynolds in 6-2 fashion. On court 1, the 28th-ranked Bulldog duo of Florian Broska and Nicolas Ocana then ousted Knights Evan Bottorff and Cole Groetsch 6-2 on court 1.
The Bulldogs carried that momentum into singles, winning all courts with relative ease. State's Davide Tortora made quick work of Deiters, downing the Knight 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. On court one, the 87tht ranked Broska wrapped up next, holding off BU's Groetsch 6-1, 6-0.
On court 5, true freshman Carles Hernandez would make his debut in the Maroon and White and secure his first collegiate win, downing Staff 6-1, 6-2. Following right behind would-be court 3 with Colas firing forehand shots to win 6-1, 6-3 over BU's Reynolds. Next up would-be State's Ramskogler on court 4, defeating Bottorff 6-3, 6-2. Wrapping up play would be Malesevic, as the Bulldog took down Berglund 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
MSU 7, North Alabama 0
In the second match of the day, State brought the same energy from the first match and made quick work of the Lion doubles tandems. On court 3, the Bulldog pair of Malesevic and Tortora crushed North Alabama's Cade Reasons and Tim Heslin 6-1. The 87th-ranked Bulldog duo of Colas and Ramskogler continued their dominance, by downing Kyle Johnson and Tim Heslin 6-3. Wrapping up action would be court 1, with the 28th ranked MSu team of Broska and Ocana ousting Lions Carlos Matarredona and Andreas Hansen 6-3.
Singles was no different.
On court 5, Ramskogler would make it 2-0 in the late match as he made quick work of the Lions' Reasons, 6-1, 6-1. Malesevic would be right behind as he cruised over Johnson in 6-3, 6-1 fashion at No. 3. On court 6, Tortora dominated in a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Heslin. Immediately after, Broska finished on court 1 as he took down Matarredone 6-0, 6-3. Next up would-be State's Colas on at the No. 2 position, defeating Hansen 6-3, 6-0. Wrapping up the day would be Hernandez, as the Bulldog took down UNA's Bixby 6-2, 6-4.
Next up, MSU welcomes ULL on Friday, January 22, before entertaining Middle Tennessee on Sunday, January 24.
