Women's Golf Releases Spring Schedule
January 14, 2021 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE – After competing in three events during the fall, head coach Charlie Ewing announced the Mississippi State women's golf 2021 spring schedule on Thursday.
"I am incredibly excited to get this spring season started as well as having the opportunity to work with such an awesome group of student-athletes," said Ewing. "We have a very hungry group of women that cannot wait to get back to work as a team and back on the road to compete. Obviously, this has already been a very challenging year for all teams around the country, but we are so grateful that the Southeastern Conference and Mississippi State University have given us the privilege to continue to travel and compete in the sport we love through these unordinary circumstances."
The squad opens the season on Jan. 31-Feb. 2 in Orlando, Florida, to compete in the UCF Challenge. The three-day event, hosted by the University of Central Florida, is set to be played at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Former Bulldog Jessica Peng won the singles title after carding an 11-under during the 2017 edition of the event.
After a short break, State heads back to Florida on Feb. 21-23 to compete in the Gators Invitational in Gainesville. Hosted by University of Florida women's golf, the three-day event is set to be played on The Mark Bostick Golf Course. This will be the first time MSU women's golf has competed on this course since 2013.
During the following week (March 1-3), the Bulldogs will head to Columbia, South Carolina, to participate in the Gamecock Intercollegiate at Columbia Country Club.
After being rescheduled due to COVID-19 from spring 2020 to fall 2020, the annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic returns to its normal timeline for the spring of 2021. The event will be played at the University of Georgia Golf Course on March 19-21. During the fall event, Mississippi State's Hannah Levi claimed the first individual title of her career after shooting a 3-under 213. She was one of three titlists at the event, joining Mikayla Bardwell of Tennessee and Megan Schofill of Auburn. Levi was the first Bulldog to claim an individual title since Peng's 2017 UCF Challenge win.
The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic at The University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on April 6-7.
MSU will begin its postseason at the SEC Championship, which will take place April 14-18 at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham. This year will mark the third-consecutive season in which the championship will feature both stroke and match play, with match play taking place on the final two days of the tournament. Three rounds of stroke play will occur the opening three days of the championship. The final round on Sunday will be televised to a national audience on SEC Network.
"We have a fantastic schedule put together across the Southeast," said Ewing. "This is certainly going to challenge our team at a very high level as we will compete with many of the top teams in college golf week after week, heading towards the championship season. We cannot wait to get on the road, wear our maroon and white and represent this university as best we possibly can every step of the way."
Mississippi State, competing in only three events, rounded out its 2020 fall slate ranked No. 24 with three golfers in the Top 100. Ashley Gilliam led the way, checking in at No. 50 in the country after posting 73.0 stroke average for the fall and recording three rounds of par or better. Levi ranked 77th behind her win to cap the fall slate, while Clara Moyano came in at No. 99 after being one of two Bulldogs to compete in all three fall events.
