Price earns academic honor from College Sports Information Directors of America
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State baseball graduate student-athlete Spencer Price has garnered another award for the 2020 season, this time landing a spot on the Academic All-District VI first team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday (May 14).

Since the CoSIDA began announcing Academic All-District teams in 2002, Mississippi State has 16 student-athletes that have earned the honor, with 12 first-team honorees. Price is the first Diamond Dawg to earn Academic All-District since Ryan Gridley in 2017 and will now be eligible for a spot on the Academic All-America squad that will be announced in June.

In the classroom, Price owns his undergraduate degree in kinesiology, as he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2019. He earned Dean's List (3.5-3.79 GPA) or President's List (3.8-4.00 GPA) in four of his six undergraduate semesters and owned a 4.00 GPA after one semester of graduate school. He has also garnered SEC Academic Honor Roll (2019) and SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll (2017) during his time on campus.

In 2020, Price made eight relief appearances and recorded the final out in all eight outings. He led the team in appearances (8) and saves (2), and did not allow a run of his own during the shortened campaign. He didn't walk a batter in seven of eight appearances and allowed just one of two inherited runners to score.

After posting the second-most saves in a single season at 14 during the 2017 campaign, Price missed 2018 due to injury and didn't record a save in 2019. He picked up his first save in 1,055 days when he locked down the opening game of a two-game, neutral site series versus No. 2 Texas Tech on March 10. His last save prior to that came versus Alabama on April 20, 2017.

He followed that by moving into a tie for No. 7 on the career saves chart with a 10-pitch save versus the Red Raiders in the series finale. Price got a flyout, strikeout and lineout to preserve the one-run lead. His second save in as many days moved his career total to 16, which equals that of Bryan Hardwich (16; 1979-80, 82) and former teammate Cole Gordon (16; 2016-19) on State's all-time list.

Along with the Academic All-District nod, Price was named SEC Pitcher of the Week on March 16 following his two-save effort versus Texas Tech. It was the first weekly award in Price's career.
