STARKVILLE – The Baltimore Ravens picked Mississippi State offensive lineman Tyre Phillips in the third round with pick No. 106 overall – the last pick of Day 2 of the 2020 Draft.
"It was amazing once Baltimore got the last pick, and I saw that Baltimore [phone] number," Phillips said. "It was just an amazing feeling. My heart dropped. I was relieved. I shed a tear, and I had other guys, other NFL guys that I know from Mississippi State came back and supported me. And it was just a dream come true."
Phillips emerged as one of the top offensive tackles in the SEC in 2019. He started all 13 games at left tackle, played a team-high 821 snaps (819 at left tackle and two at left guard) and earned the highest offensive grade among MSU offensive linemen from PFF (80.1). The Grenada, Mississippi, product allowed just 2.0 sacks and one QB hit across 398 snaps in pass protection.
"He's definitely a guy that we looked at who can move inside to guard," Ravens Director of Player Personnel Joe Hortiz said. "In terms of competing for a starting job, all these guys we draft we expect to come in and compete. But there are guys here we believe in too, so he's going to have to come in and get to work and fight for the position."
Prior to MSU, Phillips played two seasons at East Mississippi Community College. He played just one season of football in high school.
Phillips, at 6-foot-5, 331 pounds, is the second-heaviest offensive lineman on the Ravens roster, only behind Orlando Brown Jr. (345 pounds).
"My style of play is tough, aggressive and just mean, just nasty, just good-old-down-south, Mississippi-style football."
