IRVING, Texas – Tyre Phillips added to his collegiate accolades Wednesday when he was recognized on the National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society for outstanding performance in the classroom.
The members of the 2020 NFF Hampshire Honor Society are comprised of college football student-athletes from all divisions of play who each maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or better throughout their college careers. An impressive 1,432 players from 364 schools qualified for membership in the Society's 14th year.
Phillips, a two-time member of the Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll, graduated in December 2019 with a degree in human development and family sciences.
After a solid NFL Combine in March and week at the Reese's Senior Bowl in January, the 6-foot-5 offensive lineman is about to embark on another chapter in his football career as the 2020 NFL Draft gets underway next week.
Phillips emerged as one of the top offensive tackles in the SEC in 2019. He started all 13 games at left tackle, played a team-high 821 snaps (819 at left tackle and two at left guard) and earned the highest offensive grade among MSU offensive linemen from PFF (80.1). The Grenada, Mississippi, product allowed just 2.0 sacks and one QB hit across 398 snaps in pass protection.
The Hampshire Honor Society represents an important component in the organization's rich history as an innovator in promoting the scholar-athlete ideal, which began in 1959 with the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Awards. Click here to learn more.
