STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's tennis true freshman Alberto Colas has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week; the league announced Wednesday.
A new face for State this spring season, Colas has earned his way into the State lineup quickly and proven an effective weapon for the Bulldogs early on in his career.
This past weekend against MSU's two Top 20 opponents on the road, the true freshman went undefeated in singles play. He pulled out a marathon 5-7, 6-3, 1-0(6) decision to claim a victory for the Bulldogs at No. 19 Tennessee on Friday. At No. 10 Georgia on Sunday, the rookie ousted UGA's Baptiste Anselmo in 7-6(4), 6-0 fashion for his third-straight triumph and fifth win in his last six decisions.
Colas is currently 7-3 in dual match singles play at the #3 and #5 singles slots. He currently holds the highest dual match singles win percentage (70%) of all Bulldogs. In doubles, the rookie is 8-2 in dual match play with Gregor Ramskogler at the No. 3 position. The duo, which had never been paired together before January, leads the team this spring with that mark.
A battle against another highly-ranked team is next on the docket for Colas and MSU, as the Bulldogs return home to host No. 12 Texas A&M this Friday, March 13, in a contest currently set for 3 p.m. CT at MSU's A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. State will also welcome No. 44 LSU and Jacksonville State in a doubleheader this Sunday, March 15, those matches slated for 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. starts.
