BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior defensive end Kobe Jones will represent Mississippi State on the Southeastern Conference Football Leadership Council at its annual meeting Friday and Saturday at the SEC offices in Birmingham.
The Council consists of one football student-athlete from each of the SEC's 14 universities. Agenda items for the group this weekend include a meeting with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, a review of NCAA and SEC legislative items, open discussion on topics submitted by members of the Council, and engagement with football officials on rules of the game, student-athlete/referee interaction and careers in officiating. Former University of Kentucky student-athlete and three-time NBA All-Star Antoine Walker will visit the group and lead a discussion on financial literacy and education.
"Being a part of the SEC Football Leadership Council is a great experience," Jones said. "It's an honor to represent Mississippi State and get to know other SEC student-athletes beyond the field. We appreciate the opportunity SEC Commissioner Sankey has given us with this program and platform."
In addition to Jones, the student-athletes who comprise the SEC Football Leadership Council are: Mac Jones (Alabama), Jordan Silver (Arkansas), Kameron Brown (Auburn), Kaiir Elam (Florida), Kearis Jackson (Georgia), Josh Paschal (Kentucky), Avery Atkins (LSU), Mohamed "MoMo" Sanogo (Ole Miss), Larry Rountree III (Missouri), Ryan Hilinski (South Carolina), Alontae Taylor (Tennessee), Andre White Jr. (Texas A&M) and Cam Robinson (Vanderbilt).
SEC Commissioner Sankey introduced new Student-Athlete Leadership Councils in 2016 for the sports of football and men's and women's basketball, which, in addition to the conference's longstanding Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), provide student-athletes with additional opportunities to engage with campus leaders and conference office staff. The councils serve as a conduit of communication to the conference office on issues related to student-athlete experience and student-athlete wellness.
Jones, a Starkville native, has been a leader on the field, in the classroom and in the community of his hometown during his time at MSU. A three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, Jones earned his bachelor's degree from MSU last December in business administration. He was the Bulldogs' nominee for the Wuerffel Trophy and Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in 2019.
Jones actively volunteers time to the Starkville Cowboys little league football and Starkville High School football programs. He represented MSU at the Black Student Athlete Summit in Austin, Texas, last year.
Jones enters his senior season in 2020 with 70 total tackles, 18.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks. He was dominant down the stretch this past season, racking up 4.5 TFLs and 3.0 sacks over the last three games.
