Mississippi State Men's Basketball Media Session
February 3, 2020
Q: What are you preparing for in order to get a win at Rupp Arena?
BH: "We're preparing for their team. They're obviously a great team and really well-coached. A Hall of Fame coach [in John Calipari], excellent back court. I think [Ashton] Hagans is really special. He'll be up for defensive player of the year. His hands are just lethal. He's so good at anticipating and creating havoc with his defense on and off the ball. [Immanuel] Quickley is playing unbelievably. He's shooting 48 percent from three in the conference which is mind boggling. [Tyrese] Maxey is an NBA player with incredible talent. Those three guards are incredibly difficult to match up with because they all drive it and shoot it. They're really good in transition."
"Then, Nick Richards has been an unbelievable story in terms of his growth as a player and how dominant he's been over the course of the last dozen games or so. He's a special talent and obviously a huge factor for them offensively. Both not only on the block, but he can face up and make 15-17 foot-shots which I didn't know he could do until this year. He looks really good doing it. He's an animal on the offensive glass. Every time the man guarding him goes to block, he's going to dunk it if they miss unless you're unbelievably good at rotating down and blocking him out. He's a great rim protector. [E.J.] Montgomery is a really good player and really long. He's a good defender playing very well. They've got really good minutes coming off their bench. [Nate] Sestina is a really good shooter. He stretches the floor. He's a graduate transfer that they picked up from Bucknell. They have a lot of talent and a lot of ability."
Q: Is the factor of the team playing better in the second half based on your halftime adjustments, or is it more the players seeing what works versus what doesn't work?
BH: "I thought we got off a good starts in our first two games in our three game homestand against both Missouri and Georgia. From that point, it's been a slow start it seems like [the last four games since then]. We've got no chance tomorrow unless we play 40 consecutive minutes of really good basketball. That's what we've got to do as a team moving forward."
Q: When you have a matchup between two stars like Reggie Perry and Nick Richards, is it difficult for the player sometimes to keep his focus?
BH: "I think you guys [the media] are making it more of a big deal than they do. This is something that is a great story, but Reggie is trying to win the game for Mississippi State. Nick Richards is trying to win the game for the University of Kentucky. I don't think they're going into this game thinking, 'I'm going against Reggie Perry,' or 'I'm going against Nick Richards.' It is what it is. There is someone really good on that team every night, and it's about us winning. Again, that's a media driven story, versus anything coming from any of those players."
Q: Is there any advantages that most of your guys have played in Rupp Arena before?
BH: "Yeah, I think that obviously when you have experience of having to been through it or been somewhere before, that helps you. At the end of the day, it's a basketball court. They've got a great home court advantage. You've got to play really well to beat anybody on the road, much less Kentucky which has the best home court advantage in our conference. It's just a great atmosphere for basketball on a national level. I don't know if there's any better home court in the entire country."
Q: How rare is it to have a player like D.J. Stewart Jr. who is so good at defense this early in his career?
BH: "D.J. is a great on-ball defender, but D.J. has got to get better off the ball. If you're really watching the game, and I'm telling him this all the time, he's not rotating down when our bigs are going over. He had eight defensive rebounds for us at Oklahoma, but he's got to be more consistent on that end."
"On the ball, he's terrific. Contesting shots, he's unbelievable. Staying in front of the ball and pressuring the ball, he's great. But he's got to become a much better basketball player defensively off the ball. With his length and his anticipation, he can be really special that way as well. He has a lot of growth and a much higher ceiling on the defensive level that he's going to be able to reach as he continues to learn and continues to grow."

The Wildcats have won eight of their last 10 games with their lone losses on the road to South Carolina (81-78 on 01/15) and to Auburn (75-66 on 02/01). Kentucky has ripped off 11 consecutive victories inside Rupp Arena since an early-season 67-64 setback to Evansville on 11/12.
Immanuel Quickley (14.3 PPG, 4.3 RPG), Nick Richards (14.0 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 2.3 BPG), Tyrese Maxey (13.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG) and Ashton Hagans (12.8 PPG, 7.0 APG, 4.0 RPG, 2.1 SPG) lead a balanced offensive attack for Big Blue.
Quickley has pumped in 10-plus points in 10 straight games and in 16 of 20 games overall. Mississippi State Men's Basketball Media Session
