STARKVILLE – Following a strong start to the 2020 dual match campaign and a perfect 4-0 record this past weekend, Mississippi State men's tennis' Gregor Ramskogler has earned SEC Player of the Week honors.
After only playing four matches last season in the Bulldog lineup at the #6 position, the sophomore Ramskogler has easily proved worthy of moving up and earning a spot in the top half of the starting rotation this season.
So far in 2019-20, Ramskogler is second on the team with 18 singles wins, 7-3 in dual matches. The Reichraming, Austria, native continued his dominance this past weekend by securing wins at the No. 3 and 1 single positions in MSU's double header against Tennessee State. At No. 3, Ramskogler defeated TSU's Juan Carlos Antezana 6-3, 6-0. Then, playing at the No. 1 position for the first time in his career, he oustedTiger Larry Sloan in dominant 6-0, 6-1 fashion.
"In the last two weeks, Gregor has stepped up his intensity in training and this is evident in his confidence and mind frame," MSU head coach Matt Roberts said. "With such a young team this year, it has been great to see the sophomore play and lead our team like an upperclassman."
In doubles, Ramskogler and partner Alberto Colas cruised to two 6-1 triumphs against the Tigers Saturday. The duo, which had never been paired together before January, is an impressive and team-leading 7-1 overall this spring in dual match action. They are currently on a four-match win streak.
In all 2019-20 matches, he is 29-16 overall. Since mid-October, Ramskogler is an impressive 16-5 in singles, 10-2 in doubles.
Ramskogler joins teammate Florian Broska as the second Bulldog to earn SEC Player of the Week honors this season. State is the only school in the league to have claimed the honor twice already in 2020.
State (8-4) now sets its sights on 2020 Southeastern Conference play. The Bulldogs will open their league slate this Friday, Feb. 28, when they host Arkansas at 3 p.m. at the Pitts Tennis Centre.
