PEORIA, Ariz. – After an incredible second round, Mississippi State sits just one stroke from first after firing a program-record 24-under-par, 552, through 36 holes at the Westbrook Invitational on Sunday.
Competing on the Par-72, 6,252-yard Westbrook Village Golf Club Vistas Course, State's second round score of 270, 18-under-par, tied the sixth-best team round in relation to par in NCAA Division I women's golf history and broke the previous MSU record by five strokes. The impressive round was spearheaded by four different Bulldogs shooting 4-under-par or better and a collective effort of 21 birdies and one eagle recorded.
The Bulldogs' 552 team score in relation to par through 36 holes shattered the previous MSU record of 562 during the 2014 Magnolia Invitational by 10 strokes. The effort marked only the fourth time ever in program history that State boasted a score of 10-under-par or better through two rounds of a tournament.
For the day, Mississippi State opened the first round by carding a 6-under-par, 282, to move into third place among the talented 16-team field. Following the second-round surge, the Bulldogs positioned themselves with a nine-stroke lead over third place and topped Oklahoma's impressive second round score of 14-under-par, 274, to pull within one stroke of the lead going into the final round on Monday.
"We fully expected and anticipated playing well this weekend," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "The team has worked extremely hard at every opportunity for this very day. We played as many rounds as possible in the most challenging conditions to prepare. We have the entire spring season ahead of us, and we still have work left to do here."
Ashley Gilliam fired an 8-under-par, 136, after 36 holes to lead the way for Mississippi State to position herself in third among the 90-participant field and sit just six strokes from the lead. The freshman shot par or better on all but one hole on the day, recording an eagle and seven birdies to card a 3-under-par, 69, for the first round and a 5-under-par, 67, in the second round.
With 12 rounds of par or better for the season, Gilliam broke the MSU freshman record for the category, surpassing Jessica Peng's 10 during the 2013-14 season.
Abbey Daniel also had a strong performance on the day. The freshman was tied for eighth after the first two rounds, rolling in 10 birdies to card a 5-under-par through 36 holes. She shot an even 72 in the first round before recording a personal-best score of 67 in the second round.
Junior Blair Stockett will also enter the final round tied for eighth after carding two strong rounds of 71 and 68 to shoot 5-under for the day. She shot 3-under on the back nine of the second round to finish the day strong.
After shooting 3-over in the first round, junior Clara Moyano responded by firing a 4-under-par, 68, in the second round. With a total score of 143, 1-under-par, after 36 holes, she will kick things off tomorrow tied for 27th. Sophomore Lauren Miller shot a solid first-round score of 70 with two birdies.
The Bulldogs will return to the course on Monday morning for the third and final round of the Westbrook Invitational. State will tee off at 9:30 a.m. CT in a shotgun start.
