STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's basketball will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2009-10 NCAA Sweet 16 squad during Sunday's game against Alabama at Humphrey Coliseum.
Head coach Sharon Fanning-Otis and the Bulldogs earned a No. 7 seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. After topping Middle Tennessee State 68-64 in the first round, Mississippi State was faced with a matchup against No. 2 seeded Ohio State. MSU went off against the eighth-ranked Buckeyes, cruising to an 87-67 victory and earning State its first ever trip to the Sweet 16.
After winning 23 games the year before, Mississippi State's 21-13 record during the Sweet 16 run marked the first time in program history that the Bulldogs posted back-to-back 20-win seasons.
The squad was led by first team All-SEC selection and two-time Gillom Trophy winner Alexis Rack, who averaged 17.5 points, 4.7 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. She knocked down a program-record 108 3-pointers on the year, which also stands as the second-most threes made during a single season in SEC history.
Armelie Lumanu became the first player in program history to earn SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording 12.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game. She was also named second team All-SEC. She was joined on the SEC All-Defensive team by Chanel Mokango, who tallied 83 blocks and 18 steals to go along with 11.6 points and 7.2 rebounds.
Coaches, players and support staff from the squad will gather for a reunion dinner on Saturday night in Starkville. The team will then be recognized on the court of State's contest against Alabama on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 1 p.m.
