Children’s of Mississippi Kid Coach of the Week: Brees Davis
February 12, 2020 | Baseball
Kid Coach is a partnership between Children's of Mississippi and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to salute pediatric patients. Their inspirational stories remind us of just how truly courageous these young people are.
This week's Children's of Mississippi Kid Coach is Brees Davis of Florence.
Before he was born, Brees' mom, Jennifer, had a routine sonogram 35 weeks into her pregnancy. Her doctors saw a mass inside Brees' chest and sent her immediately to maternal-fetal specialists at UMMC.
The mass turned out to be congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), which is a hole in the thin muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest. Brees' internal organs had pushed up through the hole into his chest, forcing his heart and both lungs over to the right side of his chest wall.
His prognosis was grim. Doctors gave Brees only a 20% chance of survival, with a grave warning that if he did survive, he wouldn't have the same quality of life as other children.
Fortunately for Brees, the CDH team at Children's of Mississippi had the expertise he needed. Jennifer finished her pregnancy under the watchful eye of doctors at UMMC and gave birth three weeks later. Brees was placed on life support right away and had surgery two days after being born to reposition his organs and repair the hole. Five weeks later, his mom said Brees went home healthy and as perfect as he could be.
Brees spent the first year of his life returning to Children's of Mississippi for checkups, x-rays, and, eventually, another surgery to remove scar tissue that had blocked an intestine. But with expert care so early in his life, they have no worries for the future. "Nothing can hold him back!" Jennifer says.
Now, Brees is a happy, healthy 8 year old. He loves playing with his little sister Rorie Jane, riding his four-wheeler, and playing baseball.
Have fun at Saturday's game, Brees. Your friends at Children's of Mississippi are cheering for you!
