Clegg Named Finalist for Ben Hogan Award November Golfer of the Month
December 08, 2020 | Men's Golf
STARKVILLE - After tying the school-record 54-hole total of 195, sophomore Ford Clegg has been named a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award's November Golfer of the Month along with TCU's Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira and Ole Miss's Jackson Suber.
Â
Results from all college, amateur and professional events are considered and can be weighed in any manner. The award's voters include 12 members of the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation and the Friends of Golf, plus three social media votes. The top vote getter on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram will each get one vote, giving the award 15 total votes.
Â
During the three-tournament fall season, Clegg won the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate and posted a top-10 finish at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational. At the Jerry Pate, he matched Alex Rocha's (1999-2000) and Ben Wood's (2014-15) lowest 54-hole total in school history.
Â
In that season finale at Old Overton Club, Clegg also shot a 63 in the second round of the tournament, the lowest round by a Bulldog since Peng Pichaikool's Lone Star Invitational visit in 2017. He tied with co-finalist Suber for the title at 15-under par with a tournament-leading 18 birdies.
Â
The Birmingham, Alabama, native is averaging 69.33 this season, more than two and a half strokes lower than his average in the 2019-20 season. The honor would mark Clegg's first recognition since winning two SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week honors in March and April of 2019.
