After failing to convert on third down on the following drive, Mississippi State (3-7, 3-7 SEC) took advantage of a muffed punt that rolled into the end zone. Long snapper Paul Blackwell fell on the ball to knot the score at 7-7. The Bulldogs went on to score on each of their next six possessions.

Both teams traded field goals to open the second quarter, before Rogers tossed another 7-yard pass – this time to Osirus Mitchell – to cap a 75-yard touchdown drive. The march featured five consecutive passes to four different Bulldog receivers, including a 37-yard toss to Walley.
Brandon Ruiz kicked a 43-yard field goal on the final play of the half to give MSU a 27-10 lead at the break.
