Minshew Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

STARKVILLE – After helping Mississippi State hold No. 7 Texas A&M to a .173 hitting percentage during a two-match series sweep last week, sophomore outside hitter Callie Minshew was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday (Nov. 9).

Minshew is the fourth Bulldog to win SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors, and the first since Bali Leffall-Young was named a co-honoree on October 20, 2014.

"Ball control was a huge focus for us in our game plan versus Texas A&M, and it is great to see that Callie found a way to contribute to that," MSU volleyball head coach Julie Darty Dennis said. "Recognition from the league is always special. It doesn't happen often for us, so this is really exciting for Callie and for our program."

Minshew led the Bulldogs in digs in both matches of the midweek contest and tallied a career-high 18 digs in the finale. The sophomore from Brandon, Mississippi, also had four blocks on her ledger.

Prior to defeating the Aggies twice on the road, MSU had only one win against a ranked opponent all-time (Oct. 14, 2011 vs. No. 25 Kentucky), though never in an away match. State pulled off consecutive SEC wins for the first time since 2016, and collected its first-ever victories in the 14-match all-time series history with A&M.

Mississippi State faces another highly ranked program when it hosts No. 2 Kentucky for two matches at the Newell-Grissom Building in Starkville, Thursday and Friday (Nov. 12-13). Both matches of MSU's final series of the fall will be nationally televised on SEC Network with first serve set for noon CT in each.
