Carter Earns Spot On Katrina McClain Award Preseason Watch List

SPRINGFIELD, Mass – Mississippi State's Jessika Carter earned a spot on the 2021 Katrina McClain Award Preseason Watch List, which is given to the nation's top power forward, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Thursday.
The Waverly Hall, Georgia, native is one of 20 candidates for the award, which is named after two-time All-American and 1987 National Player of the Year Katrina McClain. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list.
Carter, who was named a preseason All-American by Lindy's Sport Magazine, led State in rebounding (8.7 rpg), blocks (1.8 bpg), field goal percentage (.585) and double-doubles (11) and was second on the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) as a sophomore in 2019-20. The second team All-SEC selection ranked 13th in Division I in field goal percentage (.585) and 28th in offensive rebounds per game (3.8).
Carter averaged 13.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during SEC Play, and she shot a league-best 65 percent from the field. She scored in double figures 22 times last year, including 13 games with 15 or more points, and she recorded 19 games with multiple blocks. An elite rebounder, 37 percent of her scoring came on second-chance opportunities (159 of 429) for State.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds, which goes live on Friday, November 13. In early February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2021 Katrina McClain Award will be narrowed to just 10. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. McClain-Pittman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2021 Katrina McClain Power Forward Award will be presented on Friday, April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award and the Lisa Leslie Center Award.
Point guard Myah Taylor was named to the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award preseason watch list on Monday, and small forward Rickea Jackson earned a spot on the Cheryl Miller Award preseason watch list on Wednesday.
