Jackson Tabbed Preseason Candidate For Cheryl Miller Award
November 11, 2020 | Women's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass – Mississippi State's Rickea Jackson earned a spot on the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award Preseason Watch List, which is given to the nation's top small forward, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Wednesday.
The Detroit, Michigan, native is one of 20 candidates for the award, which is named after three-time Naismith Player of the Year and Class of 1995 Hall of Famer Cheryl Miller. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list.
Jackson, who was named a preseason All-American by Lindy's Sport Magazine, led the Bulldogs in scoring (15.1 ppg) and ranked third in rebounding (5.1 rpg) as a freshman in 2019-20. The second team All-SEC selection ranked fifth among all players during conference play with 16.5 points per game and eighth in field goal percentage (.480).
Jackson was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team after accounting for 22 percent of Mississippi State's scoring during conference play despite being the focal point for opposing team's defenses. The three-time SEC Freshman of the Week honoree posted eight games with 20-plus points and was the only freshman in the SEC that eclipsed the 30-point margin. For the season, she scored double digits 23 times, including 18 efforts with 15-plus points, and recorded four double-doubles.
College basketball fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds, which goes live on Friday, November 13. In early February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2021 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10. In early March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee.
The winner of the 2021 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be presented on Friday, April 9, 2021, along with the other four members of the Women's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award.
Mississippi State point guard Myah Taylor was named to the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award preseason watch list on Monday.
