Bulldog Soccer Falls to No. 9 Gamecocks on the Road
October 30, 2020 | Soccer
MSU soccer will host Arkansas for the final match of the season on November 6.
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Mississippi State soccer program couldn't find the back of the net on Friday night against No. 9 South Carolina despite their hot start, falling to the Gamecocks, 2-0, in just their second loss of the season.
The Bulldogs (2-2-3) saw opportunities against No. 9 South Carolina (6-1-0), but were greeted with a brick wall from the Gamecock defense.
"It was a tough loss tonight particularly with the chances we created," said head coach James Armstrong. "We are again proud of the effort we continue to put in and will work on improving converting our chances into goals."
Mississippi State was on fire in the first half, with Onyi Echegini being the flame. Early on, Hailey Farrington-Bentil and Echegini both fired off shots, with the London native finding the crossbar. KK Pavatt did her best to service her teammates with crucial crosses, but with caught feet and the Gamecock defense, State had trouble putting one in the goal.
Echegini would continue to create chances throughout the first half, but the game of inches proved fatal for the sophomore. State moved into halftime with the match scoreless for just the second time this season, the first coming against Auburn. In that first half, the Bulldogs had outshot the Gamecocks, 5-3.
Out of the gate, the front line was strong from the Bulldogs. Pavatt sent one from 25 yards out, but the South Carolina defense pushed it away. Olivia Simpson also used her speed and fancy footwork to make moves for MSU throughout the match.
A handball was called on State in the 64th minute, but South Carolina's penalty shot went over the top. From then on, the Gamecocks would start to take control. A corner kick provided the cross needed for South Carolina and produced the first goal of the match in the 68th minute. Not too long after, Olivia Hernandez would draw a foul inside the box, giving Mississippi State its own penalty kick chance. Niah Johnson's PK attempt was read by the Gamecocks goalkeeper and was saved but pushed out. Madison Cotta took the rebound shot but her effort was scooped up by Heather Hinz.
The Bulldogs continued to weather the Gamecocks offensive efforts and did what they could to move the ball down the pitch, but the clock became the enemy in the final 15 minutes of the match. South Carolina found the back of the net once again in the 81st minute, making the score 2-0 in their favor. Pavatt would take another shot in the final five minutes of play, but it would sail high.
