Bulldogs Stay Undefeated at Home After Mizzou Draw
October 24, 2020 | Soccer
The State soccer program tied with Mizzou, 1-1, on Senior Night.
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State soccer program fought to a double-overtime finish with Missouri on Senior Night, coming to a 1-1 draw at the finish.
State (2-1-3) never let up on the Tigers (1-2-2) on a chilly, wet night at the MSU Soccer Complex.
"We hoped for the three points tonight and we got really close, particularly in overtime there, but the girls showed a ton of fight; a ton of heart," said head coach James Armstrong. "We had a great goal to get back into the game and it was an absolute battle out there. I couldn't be prouder of the girls' efforts through the whole entire game."
The team's three seniors were celebrated pregame, with Kristen Malebranche, Olivia Hernandez and AK Ward all earning warm receptions by the Bulldog crowd.
The Bulldogs started the game with the same lineup as seen against No. 9 Texas A&M, the first time this season they have not had a change in their starting 11.
It was Mizzou who struck first, with Macy Trujillo finding the back of the net in the 37th minute, assisted by Grace Kitts and Blythe Beldner.
The Bulldogs trailed going into the half, but it wouldn't take but 12 minutes into the second for Onyi Echegini to be found in the box by KK Pavatt who delivered the cross. Echegini would head it in past the Tiger's keeper for the goal, her second of the season.
"Firstly, it was a great cross," said Echegini of Pavatt's pass. "Honestly, it went straight to my head and just bounced off. It's moments like this that you have to take, and from that moment onwards we kept going; we had momentum. We were down at first until the very end of the game. It's unfortunate not to get the W, but we fought for 110 minutes."
Hannah Pimentel entered the match for Maddy Anderson midway through the second half, making her collegiate debut after Anderson briefly left with an injury. Anderson returned with just under three minutes left in regulation.
As it was with two other home matches this season, the battle with the Tigers moved into extra time. State had the most dangerous chance in the first overtime period but was found offsides.
Missouri tested Anderson once in the second overtime, but the Bulldog keeper deflected the ball away for a corner, earning herself a save.
