Women's Golf in Middle of SEC Pack After Round One
October 19, 2020 | Women's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. – Mississippi State women's golf opened play at The Ally on Monday, recording a first-round score of 5-over 293 to finish the day in seventh place at the Old Waverly Golf Club.
Â
"There was a lot we did well out there today as a team," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "Including the way we managed ourselves, lifted each other up and stayed in it until the very last shot. We capitalized on some great, great opportunities and just have a few areas to sharpen up so that we are all ready for an exceptional day tomorrow, hosting an incredible field."
Â
Leading the Bulldogs, sophomore Ashley Gilliam sits tied for 10th after shooting a 1-under par 71 in her first event back since February. She sank two back-to-back birdies heading into the back nine to complete round one with three birdies total.
Â
After shooting even par 72 for the day, sophomore Abbey Daniel is tied for 21st place going into round two, birdieing her first and last hole of the day. Competing in her first event as a Bulldog, Senior Valeria Mendizabal finished the day tied for 31st after carding a first-round score of 74.
Â
Senior Clara Moyano rolled in birdies on her first and last holes, tying for 46th and shooting 4-over par 76, while senior Blair Stockett ended with a score of 79, 7-over par to tie for 61st.
