BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Former standout center Martha Alwal-Omot has been named Mississippi State's representative for the Southeastern Conference's 2020 class of Women's Legends, the league office announced Monday.
One of the best shot blockers in SEC history, Omot (formerly Alwal) embraced the defensive mindset that Vic Schaefer brought to State in 2012. The three-time All-SEC selection ranks sixth all-time in conference history with 328 blocks, which also stands as the MSU school record, and became just the second player ever to lead the league in blocks for four straight years.
The Worthington, Minnesota, native is one of just four players in SEC history to record 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocks in a career (Florida's Vanessa Hayden, LSU's Sylvia Fowles and South Carolina's A'ja Wilson). The two-time SEC All-Defensive Team honoree finished her career with 1,328 points, 1,010 rebounds and 328 blocks.
During her junior campaign, Omot earned first-team All-SEC recognition and was tabbed SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year after finishing with 538 points, a then-school record 317 rebounds and a program-record 97 blocks. She earned second-team All-SEC honors during her senior and sophomore seasons while also being tabbed to the all-freshmen team during her first year on campus.
The class includes former student-athletes and coaches from all 14 SEC member institutions. On Mondays and Thursdays during women's basketball season, one individual will be highlighted on the SEC's website and via social media.
The class will be honored at the 2020 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament, March 4‐8 in Greenville, South Carolina. Each legend will be honored during half‐time of their teams first game of the tournament, all 14 individuals will also be honored as a group, as well as participate in an autograph session during the tournament. Complimentary posters of the Legends will be available at the session.
