STARKVILLE – Following a strong start to the 2020 dual match campaign, Mississippi State's Florian Broska has earned SEC Player of the Week honors.
After moving up in the Bulldog singles lineup from the No. 6 position in 2019 to No. 2 in 2020, the junior Broska has easily proven worthy of that move early on this season.
Broska is a team-best 5-1 in dual match singles play at the No. 2 spot thus far in 2020. After a 3-0 start during MSU's opening weekend of action, his only setback of the spring came in a tough three-set affair at Florida State.
The Eitelborn, Germany, product rebounded strong this past weekend during the ITA Kickoff Weekend, posting two consecutive Top 50 victories in straight sets, including the highest ranked win of his three-year career when he ousted Georgia's 12th-ranked Phillip Henning 6-4, 6-2 Saturday. He followed that with an equally impressive 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Oklahoma's 50th-ranked Mason Beiler, helping the Bulldogs to their 4-0 shutout of the 22nd-ranked Sooners on Sunday.
"This is a great honor for Flo.", said Mississippi State head Coach Matt Roberts, "He comes to work every day ready to get better, ready to be a leader, and ready to push his teammates. This honor shows his hard work is paying off and everyone has to trust the process if they want to improve."
In doubles thus far this spring, Broska is 3-1 in dual match play with partner Nicolas Ocana, leading the Bulldogs at the No. 1 position.
In all 2019-20 matches, he is 28-11 overall. Since mid-October, he is 14-2 in singles.
The victory over Oklahoma on Sunday lifted Broska and the Bulldogs back into the nation's Top 25 this week, as State sits at No. 23 in this week's ITA national rankings. MSU will hit the road to the Sunshine state to face South Florida this Friday, Jan. 31, in Tampa at 12:30 p.m. CT, before meeting Miami in Fort Myers this Sunday, Feb. 2, at 9:30 a.m. CT.
