STARKVILLE – Mississippi State dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 18/RV Memphis on Sunday night, despite a five-save effort from Gabby English.
With the loss, MSU drops to 4-2-0, with its only losses coming to ranked squads at home.
"The girls are working really hard, and that is the disappointing part with the score line tonight," head coach James Armstrong said. "I thought we were really good for 85 minutes. We went toe-to-toe with a really, really good Memphis team. The difference is they capitalized on mistakes, and we did not."
After conceding a goal off a header in the ninth minute, the Bulldogs made things extremely difficult for Memphis for the next 80 minutes. English closed the first half with four saves, and the Tigers were only able to muster six shots.
For the game, MSU held the Tigers to just 11 shots, well below their average of 16.8 attempts per game. The Bulldog back line also caught Memphis offsides twice.
State twice put difficult shots on net as balls were deflected on their way to the goal, but Memphis' Elizabeth Moberg tracked them successfully to make the saves. MaKayla Waldner and AK Ward both had shots from just off the penalty spot blocked on their way to the net.
Despite their defensive battle, the Bulldogs conceded again in the 88th minute when the Tigers' Clarissa Larisey dribbled along the end line before chipping the ball over English's head. Larisey found the net again in the next minute after being set up with a through pass from Samantha Murphy. With 28 seconds on the clock, Larisey scored her third of the night after intercepting a pass to result in the final score.
"I thought we played our style against a very good Memphis team that puts a lot of pressure on the ball," Armstrong said. "That is a definite positive. The negative is we gave up three goals in three minutes. That is not like our team. We usually fight with a lot of grit. We just let our heads go down after the second goal."
MSU remains at home next week to host South Alabama on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. CT. The match will air on SEC Network+.
