NORMAN, Okla. – Mississippi State women's golf rallied in the third round of the Schooner Fall Classic, stringing together eight birdies in the final four holes to record a 3-under par 277 en route to a third-place finish.
MSU entered the day in sixth place, but the Bulldogs shot 5-under on the back nine of the par-70, 6,048-yard Belmar Golf Club on Sunday. The late push earned State its best finish of the season and gave the team plenty of momentum heading into the Magnolia Invitational in two weeks.
"We have been trending in this direction since our first event," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "We have been waiting and watching for the day it all comes together, and today was that day. We held our own through 20-mile per hour winds, but a struggling middle stretch of holes found us shaky. Our players were determined to turn it around and did just that. We had one exciting finish with eight birdies in the last four holes to working our way up to a third-place finish in a top-10 collegiate event."
Freshman Ashley Gilliam had an incredible day, carding a 65 and climbing 22 spots on the leaderboard to finish the event tied for third. Shooting 5-under par on the day, the performance tied her for the second-best round ever by a freshman in Mississippi State history and was the lowest score since teammate Aubree Jones set the program record with a round of 6-under par at the Ocean Course Invite in 2017.
Overall, Gilliam finished the tournament 2-under par with a score of 208. After today, she has four rounds of par or better already this season, which currently places her at sixth on the all-time freshman list at MSU.
"I stayed really patient all week," said Gilliam. "I was hitting it well and hit a lot of fairways and greens but just wasn't dropping putts. I stuck with my process and got some putts to drop today."
Senior Clara Moyano earned the best finish of her Mississippi State career, tying for 11th after carding a total score of 210 to end the event even at par. After a tough start to the tournament, freshman Abbey Daniel responded well the last two days by shooting back-to-back rounds of par or better. On Sunday, Daniel shot 1-under par and climbed 15 spots to finish tied for 34th.
Jones, who posted a pair of birdies on the final three holes to help State finish strong, was even (70) in the final round and finished tied for 28th. Junior Blair Stockett was 5-over on the day and finished tied for 73rd.
Competing as an individual, senior Athena Yang put together a solid round at 2-over to and was tied for 45th with a score of 218 for the event.
Mississippi State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 13, for the Bulldogs' home event, the Magnolia Invitational, at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi. Teams will begin teeing off at 8 a.m., and fans are encouraged to come out to the three-day event, as admission is free.
