WEST POINT, Miss. – Mississippi State women's golf sits in third after the first round at the Magnolia Invitational hosted at home course, Old Waverly Golf Club. The Bulldogs are five shots back from first place.
"We played hard in less than ideal circumstances," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "I'm proud of the day overall. We struggled to finish on number 18, which is the toughest hole on the course, so we are looking for revenge tomorrow. Having 36 holes left, two-thirds of the event, it's clear that this team is hungry and talented. I look forward to an incredible day tomorrow for the Bulldogs."
Due to the weather forecast for Tuesday, the Bulldogs will play 36 holes on Monday, Oct. 14., for the second and third rounds of the invitational to conclude the event. Teams will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. State's lineup will be teeing off on holes one through four.
Freshman Ashley Gilliam had a successful day shooting even par (72), rolling in three birdies to lead the team. She sits at sixth place after the first round of the event. Also tied for sixth place, senior Clara Moyano stayed consistent despite the conditions, and finished the day at even par.
Carding a score of 74, junior Aubree Jones had three birdies on the front nine and a birdie on the back nine to finish the round at 2-over par. She led the field for most of the day and sits in 15th place heading into the final two rounds.
Senior Athena Yang shot 4-over par, a score of 76, putting her in a tie for 29th by the end of the day. Sophomore Lauren Miller sits tied for 46th after shooting a total round score of 80 (8-over par).
State has three players competing as individuals in the tournament. Junior Blair Stockett shot just 1-over par (73) to tie for 12th place after the first round. Freshman Ally Williams shot 78 to tie for 32nd, while Abbey Daniel shot a 79 to tie for 39th to end the day.
