SHANGHAI, China – Thanks to a phenomenal fourth round, Mississippi State men's golfer Peng Pichaikool recorded his highest finish with a third-place tie at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship over the weekend.
Pichaikool had the opportunity to compete against some of the top amateur golfers in his home continent for the second consecutive year. For the tournament, he logged a nine-under, 279 which was one shot behind China's Yuxin Lin and Japan's Takumi Kanaya.
"It means a lot to represent my country and MSU," Pichaikool said. "This is a great opportunity for me to build on for this season."
Pichaikool's tournament was highlighted by his seven-under, 65 during the final round where he carded 14 consecutive bogey free holes fueled by two eagles and a birdie on the back nine.
"I just started the day believing that I wasn't out of the tournament and I gave it a good run." Pichaikool said. "Slightly disappointed with my overall result after the first three days, but I just can't complain about the way I finished."
The 65 was the second-best round of the tournament which enabled Pichaikool to bolt up the leaderboard 13 positions to claim a share of the third-place spot. His score of 65 is just one stroke back from the lowest recorded round in his Bulldog career which he recorded in Louisville last season.
Holes eight through 13 of round three also were solid for Pichaikool. He recorded four birdies over the six holes. The senior finished the third round with a score of two-under, 70. Pichaikool tallied a 71 in the first round with back-to-back birdies on holes three and four and secured a 73 during round two.
The 72 hole event took place in Shanghai, China at the Sheshan International Golf Club. The par-72, 7,266-yard course plays host annually to the WGC-HSBC Champions.
The 120-player field is annually comprised of the top male amateurs in the Asia-Pacific region representing the 42 Asia Pacific Golf Confederation member organizations. Pichaikool represented his home country of Thailand.
Pichaikool will head back to the United States this week to prepare for the remaining tournaments slated for the Bulldog's fall schedule.
