NORMAN, Okla. – In 1st place is senior Clara Moyano, who lead the bulldogs and shot 4-under par (66), rolling in 5 birdies.
"I was just really focusing on the target that I wanted to hit, committing to it, and swinging freely," said Moyano. "The conditions were tough out there today, so being patient was the key to a successful round."
The Mississippi State women's golf team opened play Friday at the Schooner Fall Classic, recording an opening-round 7-over 285 to finish the day tied for fourth place at the Belmar Golf Club. The Bulldogs are only five strokes away from first.
Moyano's score of 66 ties for the fourth-lowest round in program history.
Freshman Ashley Gilliam , is currently tied 19th in the event, shot 2-over par for the day, while junior Aubree Jones was 3-over par (73) in the opening round, tying her for 28th place.
Tied for 59th, junior Blair Stockett carded a score of 76, 6-over par for the day, while freshman Abbey Daniel shot 7-over par (77) to tie for 65th.
Opening her season, Individual, Athena Yang tied for 50th and shot 5-over par for a score of 75.
"Today was incredibly challenging," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "The style of course is similar to Mossy Oak with bent grass greens. I have no doubt because of the level of challenge of our home courses, we were much better prepared to play. Clara has been on the cusp of shooting a low number, as she has hovered around par for the first two events. She was patient and kept her process going all day and finished it like a champ. She is working on her mental skills out there and it shows."
State returns to the course Saturday morning for the second round, teeing off at 9 a.m. CT.
