DOHA, Qatar – After an eight-week hiatus, Anderson Peters will return to the javelin runway on Oct. 5 at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
The rising junior at Mississippi State will represent Grenada as one of four current or former Bulldogs at the championships.
The world championships will air live on the NBC family of networks. The meet can also be streamed online via NBC Sports Gold with a track and field pass, featuring both track and field event feeds.
In his last meet, the two-time NCAA champion claimed a gold medal on the back of a Pan American Games-record throw of 87.31m (286-5), which also broke his previous MSU and Grenadian national records.
The rising junior is looking to become one of the youngest throwers to medal at a world championship. The youngest ever was Czechoslovakia's Jan Zelezny who was 21 years and 75 days old when he first medaled at the 1987 meet. Zelezny is also the oldest to ever medal in the event, winning gold in 2001 at 57 years old.
The youngest gold medalist in the history of the meet was Marius Corbett of South Africa who won the 1997 championship at 21 years and 313 days old. Peters will be 21 years and 350 days old on the date of the finals.
Peters failed to make the finals at his first world championships, finishing 20th in London in 2017. The last athlete into the final that year threw 82.46m (270-6). Peters has thrown farther than that mark in five of seven meets this year and boasts the No. 8 throw in the world in 2019. He is currently ranked ninth in the IAAF World Rankings and continues to chase the all-dates collegiate record of 89.10m (292-4) set by Texas' Patrik Boden in 1990.
The St. Andrews, Grenada, native would be just his country's third medalist in any event while his countrymen have finished in the top eight just eight times across all events.
