Bulldogs Carry Canadian 800m Hopes at World Championships
September 27, 2019 | Track & Field
DOHA, Qatar – Familiar foes Brandon McBride and Marco Arop will represent Mississippi State and their home nation of Canada in the 800m at the IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar, this week.
Arop, a rising junior at MSU, and McBride, who completed his eligibility in 2016, are two of four current and former Bulldogs competing at the championships. McBride is currently the fourth-ranked 800m runner in the IAAF World Rankings, while Arop is No. 21.
The world championships will air live on the NBC family of networks. The meet can also be streamed online via NBC Sports Gold with a track and field pass, featuring both track and field event feeds.
All of Canada will be cheering for the Bulldogs when the men's 800m begins with first round heats on Friday, Sept. 27. Arop and McBride are Canada's lone representatives in the event. Arop is coming off a gold-medal performance at the Pan American Games seven weeks ago where he broke the Pan American Games and MSU school record with a run of 1:44.25.
The duo has a history of competing alongside each other. They finished first and second at the 2018 NACAC Championships in Toronto, and McBride has narrowly edged out Arop in each of the last two Athletics Canada championships. McBride holds the Canadian national record outdoors with a personal-best of 1:43.20, while Arop shattered the national indoor record this season.
Canada's highest finish at the World Championships came in 2007, when Gary Reed won a silver medal in 1:47.10. Reed previously held the national indoor record that Arop has since claimed. The 2016 bronze medalist finished in 1:42.93, so both Bulldogs should be prepared to run lifetime bests for a chance to medal.
Over the last four world championships dating back to 2011, it has taken at least a run of 1:47.24 to advance from the first round and a 1:45.93 run to make the finals.
In his collegiate career, McBride was a nine-time All-American, two-time NCAA Champion and two-time SEC Champion. He is tied with Tavaris Tate for the most All-American honors in MSU history. Arop has twice finished as the NCAA runner-up and has broken McBride's school records both indoors and outdoors.
