OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – A preseason All-American and candidate for both the Rimington and Outland Trophies, Mississippi State center Darryl Williams is now also one of 30 candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Just 15 credit hours away from earning his undergraduate degree in human development and family sciences, Williams has maintained a 3.0 cumulative GPA and has been on the SEC Academic Honor Roll throughout his career and has interned at the Starkville Sportsplex as part of his degree program.
A tremendous ambassador for the Mississippi State football program and representative of the state, Williams embodies everything the program and MSU stand for and aim to achieve. He is widely respected by his teammates and coaches and was voted a team captain by his teammates. He is the ultimate leader and competitor constantly working to master his craft and get the most out of himself and his peers.
Williams also takes every opportunity to contribute to the program's community service efforts, including spending time at events like visiting the Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.
The Bessemer, Alabama, native is one of the hardest working players on either side of the ball. He continues to develop and has tremendous pro potential in the future. He moved from left guard to center during spring ball, and anchors an offensive line that paves the way for one of the most dangerous rushing attacks in college football. He also has allowed only one sack in 29 career starts.
To determine the final Senior CLASS Award winner, the 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition. Along with the winner, the 10 finalists will be awarded Senior CLASS Award first- or second-team honors.
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the football bowl season in January.
