Nashville, Tenn. – The Mississippi State women's golf team opened play at the Mason Rudolph Invitational, recording an opening-round score of 291 for 3-over par to finish the day tied for sixth place at the Vanderbilt Legends North Course.
"We worked hard today and the ladies rose to the occasion," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "This is the longest course of our competitive regular-season schedule at 6,460 yards. The Vanderbilt North Course is not just long; the green complexes are well bunkered and lots of undulations making hitting greens in the correct quadrant and putting with good speed critical to scoring. Their commitment to the process, each other and to our program is the reason we are seeing this success. Lots of golf left with even more challenging hole locations, but they can handle it."
Freshman Ashley Gilliam led the way for MSU, carding a 1-under par 71 to tie for ninth place. Junior Aubree Jones shot even (72) for the day, rolling in 4 birdies. Jones finished up placing 12th for the first round.
Junior Blair Stockett, who is tied for 24th after the first round, shot just 1-over par for the day. Senior Clara Moyano shot 2-over par to tie for 32nd, while freshman Abbey Daniel finished 7-over par with a score of 79 in the opening round tying for 67th.
State returns to the course Saturday morning for the second round, teeing off at 8:30.
