STARKVILLE – A pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns by Kansas State was difficult to overcome for Mississippi State as the Bulldogs dropped a 31-24 decision on Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium.
State (2-1) had its non-conference regular season winning streak come to a close at 11 consecutive games.
The Wildcats (3-0) drew first blood with a 35-yard field goal courtesy of Blake Lynch in the first quarter. Jordon Brown struck on a seven-yard rush early in the second to make it 10-0. The Brown score accounted for the first rushing touchdown by an opponent at Davis Wade Stadium in 33 quarters.
Both quarterbacks recorded a rushing touchdown during the second quarter before Tommy Stevens found Osirus Mitchell for a 35-yard scoring strike with nine seconds remaining to bring the Bulldogs within 17-14 at halftime.
With the touchdown reception, Mitchell became the first MSU player with a receiving touchdown in each of the first three games of a season since Chad Bumphis in 2012.
Freshman quarterback Garrett Shrader entered the game early in the third quarter. He directed a 12-play, 79-yard scoring march and found paydirt from five yards out to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the game at 21-17 with 4:47 to go in the third.
Jace Christmann matched his career-best with a 47-yard field goal to extend the Bulldogs advantage to 24-17 to begin the fourth.
Kansas State's Malik Knowles responded and returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards to tie the game at 24-24. Skylar Thompson's 15-yard pass to Dalton Schoen secured the victory for the Wildcats at the 5:37 mark.
Mississippi State put together a potential game-tying drive during the final minutes, but Shrader's 15-yard rush was stopped one yard shy at the K-State 20-yard line on a fourth down play with 2:35 left.
For the third time this season, Kylin Hill amassed over 100 yards on the ground. He tallied 111 yards on 24 carries as the Bulldogs outrushed Kansas State, 201-146. The junior running back become the first MSU player since Keefer McGee in 1996 to secure three consecutive 100-yard rushing games to start a season and surpassed 1,500 career rushing yards.
Leo Lewis paced the defense with a career-high 12 tackles, while Erroll Thompson and Jaquarius Landrews followed with nine a piece. The nine stops for Landrews also marked a career-best.
MSU concludes its current three-game homestand next Saturday, Sept. 21, by welcoming Kentucky. The Wildcats were 2-0 heading into their SEC opener versus Florida Saturday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT at Davis Wade Stadium. The game will be televised by SEC Network or SEC Network Alternate as well as through WatchESPN.
