BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The SEC Men's and Women's Basketball Leadership Council's annual meeting will take place Friday and Saturday at SEC headquarters in Birmingham, with Mitchell Storm and Myah Taylor representing Mississippi State.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey introduced new Student-Athlete Leadership Councils in 2016 for the sports of men's and women's basketball along with football, which, in addition to the conference's longstanding Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), provide student-athletes with additional opportunities to engage with campus leaders and conference office staff.
The council consists of one male representative and one female representative from each of the SEC's 14 institutions. The goal of the Leadership Council is for student-athletes to serve as a conduit of communication from their teams to the conference office on issues related to student-athlete experience, student-athlete wellness, and to provide feedback on proposed rules governing the SEC and NCAA.
Last season, Taylor played in all 34 games as the women's basketball team earned its third consecutive Elite Eight appearance. The Olive Branch, Mississippi, native averaged 3.0 points and 1.7 steals per game.
Storm was a part of last year's men's team that captured the program's first NCAA Tournament bid since the 2008-09 season. The Madison, Mississippi, native saw action in four games with the Bulldogs.
Among the agenda items for the group is dinner and a conversation with Commissioner Sankey, a review of NCAA and SEC legislative items, and the 28 student-athletes will also have an opportunity to engage with men's and women's basketball officials on rules of the game, student-athlete/referee interaction and careers in officiating. Keyon Dooling, former Missouri student-athlete, author, motivational speaker and former NBA player, will speak to the group on Saturday on the topic of mental wellness.
