STARKVILLE – Off the heels of adding Josh Johnson as an assistant coach, Mississippi State softball announced the additions of Katiyana Mauga and Nicole Pendley to the staff for the 2020 season.
Mauga, a two-time All-American at Arizona and one of the top home run hitters in NCAA history, will serve as the program's volunteer assistant coach over the course of the 2018-19 season. Pendley, who won two national championships at Oklahoma, joins the program as a graduate assistant.
"I am thrilled to complete our coaching staff with the additions of Katiyana Mauga and Nicole Pendley," head coach Samantha Ricketts said. "Both Kati and Nicole come from established, successful programs and will help me implement these standards within our team. With Nicole's two national championships and Kati's 92 career home runs, they both provide an elite outlook and approach to what championship-level softball is all about."
A native from San Diego, California, Mauga left Arizona as one of the most decorated hitters to play Division I softball. She is the only player in NCAA history to hit 20 home runs in each of her four seasons. She finished first or second in the Pac-12 in home runs all four years of her career and holds Arizona's and the Pac-12's career home run record. Her 92 career home runs stand second in NCAA history.
A two-time All-American (2017, 2015), the Wildcat third baseman finished her career with 257 career RBI to stand fifth in Arizona history, sixth in Pac-12 history and 13th in NCAA history. She closed her career with an .829 slugging clip to set Arizona's program record. The mark also stands third in Pac-12 history and 13th in the NCAA record book.
She was named 2017 Co-Pac-12 Player of the Year and 2014 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. She was a top 10 finalist for 2014 NFCA Freshman of the Year and 2017 USA Softball Player of the Year. Mauga was named to the NFCA All-West Region Team on three occasions and was a four-time All-Pac-12 Team honoree. She won Pac-12 Player of the Week five times and took home two national player of the week awards over her career.
She was drafted sixth overall in the 2017 NPF Draft to the Texas Charge.
A standout outfielder for the Sooners, Pendley brought home two national championships during her tenure at Oklahoma. The Rio Rancho, New Mexico, native was a three-time All-Big 12 honoree and earned three NFCA All-Region honors.
Pendley finished her career ranked sixth in games played (254) and RBI (189), seventh in home runs (47), eighth in at-bats (730), ninth in total bases (422) and runs (177) and tenth in extra-base hits (83) and total hits (240).
A competitor in big moments, Pendley was named the Most Outstanding Player at the 2018 Big 12 Championship and selected to the 2017 and 2018 All-Tournament Teams.
Pendley continues to compete professionally within the NPF and is currently with the Cleveland Comets.
