STARKVILLE – As he played some key rounds in his time for Mississippi State men's golf, Ross Bell's career in the Maroon and White also was characterized by his stellar performance in the classroom.
On Wednesday, the former Bulldog was named a Srixon/Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
To qualify for the award, NCAA Division I junior and senior student-athletes must maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 while boasting a stroke average below 76.0 and playing in 50-percent of his team's rounds.
Bell more than met the demands as he earned a 3.85 cumulative GPA while starting in eight of State's 12 team events as a senior. In December, he graduated with a degree in accounting after he amassed a 3.88 GPA in his major course work.
Over his career, Bell swept SEC Academic Honor Roll selections as he earned the award all five years of his stay in Starkville. In each of his final three seasons, Bell was the men's golf recipient of the Newsom Award, MSU's recognition of academic achievement.
Bell also was named to the SEC Community Service Team for three straight years from 2015-17 and earned a place at the SEC Career Tour in 2017.
For five years, Bell's example has led a culture of academic success for the Mississippi State men's golf program. In each of those five seasons, at least seven Golf Dawgs have earned SEC Academic Honor Roll or SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll accolades. Since 2017, the program has raked in 28 total honors.
With Bell's selection, he becomes the third Bulldog in as many seasons to earn All-America Scholar honors. A year ago, Taylor Grant earned his second-straight recognition following his final season.
For the 2018-19 campaign, Bell earned a 73.32 stroke average over 25 rounds and finished in the top 10 twice. His best performance came at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational in October where he finished fourth, leading the Golf Dawgs to a runner-up placement.
In his career, Bell played 90 rounds over 31 events for a 73.44 stroke average. He earned six top-15 performances in his four years on the course, starting in the 2014-15 season.
The MSU men's golf team will be back on the course in just over a month as they open the 2019-20 campaign at the prestigious Carmel Cup on Pebble Beach Golf Links from August 30 - September 1.
