Thompson Headlines Elite Field at Fifth Annual American JavFest

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – It wouldn't be a javelin festival without #JavU.
Curtis Thompson will represent Mississippi State at the fifth annual American JavFest hosted by the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation this weekend. Thompson will compete in the Elite Men division on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CT.
"I've competed at this meet every year since they first made the meet," Thompson said. "This one is special for me because it allows my family and friends up north to get a chance to see me throw."
The 2019 edition of JavFest will be held at East Stroudsburg South High School in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The meet includes competition for every age and ability level along with teaching and educational opportunities.
The meet is intended to be a stateside version of the great Pihtipudas Javelin Carnival in Finland. It is meant to share the joys of the javelin with throwers of all ages while allowing athletes, coaches and fans of the sport to be fully engaged educationally, socially and competitively.
Previous years have seen multiple national and international qualifying marks in the Elite competition. Two-time Olympian Cyrus Hostetler won the 2017 competition while breaking the international standard of 83.00m (272-3).
Hostetler is ninth in NCAA history when including out-of-season bests at 83.16m (272-10) thrown in 2009. Thompson sits 13th on the all-time list at 82.88m (271-11), which he threw at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials and which stood as the MSU school record at the time.
Thompson finished second at JavFest a year ago, but won the 2016 event just weeks after claiming the NCAA title that year. The Florence, New Jersey, native placed fifth in both 2015 and 2017.
