STARKVILLE – Mississippi State seniors JT Mackay and Kristy Terp have earned Academic All-American honors from CoSIDA, the organization announced on Thursday.
Â
After earning third-team recognition a year ago, Mackay was one of two SEC student-athletes to make the 15-member First Team this season. Terp is one of six SEC women to land on one of the three teams, earning a second-team nod.
Â
The 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-District Track & Field/Cross Country Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom.
Â
Mackay boasted a 4.0 GPA in finance and was named a Stephen D. Lee scholar upon graduation in May. He is an eight-time President's List selection and two-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. On top of competing during every weekend of the outdoor regular season, he was the director of MSU's investment challenge team.
Â
"It is a tremendous honor to be recognized for my academic achievement," Mackay said. "I'd like to thank the coaching staff for fostering an environment where classroom performance is the team's first priority. I'd also like to thank all of my professors for working around our travel schedule. Finally, thank you Mississippi State for all the resources you have provided student-athletes with. The best years of my life were spent in Starkville, and I am forever grateful to wear the Maroon and White."
Â
Terp also maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout her career while majoring in biological sciences on the pre-med track. She won the Newsom Award for track and field this year in addition to being a Stephen D. Lee Scholar. The Two Rivers, Wisconsin, native was also active in the community, serving as a tutor with Christian World Missions Youth Community Explosion throughout the spring semester.
Â
"I am very grateful to receive this honor," she said. "It's fun to see your hard work pay off at the end of the year. It also makes it a lot easier to succeed in the classroom when you have teammates, coaches, athletic staff, and family who are constantly pushing you and inspiring you to reach your academic and athletic goals. I am so thankful for MSU and all of the people here who have supported me as a student and an athlete these past four years."
