JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three-time All-American Tiffany Flynn earned another trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the NCAA East Prelims.
Flynn was Mississippi State's lone qualifier on the final day of competition and brought the total number of Bulldogs advancing to Austin, Texas in two weeks to 10 athletes. The Ellenwood, Georgia, native leapt 13.63m (44-8.75) to post the top mark in the competition.
"We had quite a few qualifiers that finished higher than they were supposed to, on paper," interim head coach Chris Woods said. "This has been a unique year for us. We had some setbacks early, but put together one of our best SEC meets in the past 10 years and we brought in more qualifiers to this meet than we ever had before."
Alexis Farley and Gralyn Jones both saw their seasons end on the triple jump runway. Farley placed 33rd with a jump of 12.38m (40-7.5), and Jones finished 41st on the men's side with a mark of 14.54m (47-8.5).
In the high jump, Reggie Miller attempted to clear 2.16m (7-1.0), which would have been a personal best and could have earned him a spot in the jump off for a trip to nationals, but missed three times at that height. Miller finished tied for 37th with a clearance of 2.06m (6-9.0) after passing on the 2.11m (6-11.) bar.
The Bulldog relay teams got off to a rough start with the men's 4x100m quartet finishing 21st in 40.28 and failing to advance. State bounced back in the men's 4x400m relay with Brian Evans, Terryon Conwell, Rasheed Tatham and Cameron Crump posting a season-best 3:07.31 to place 12th.
The Bulldogs missed out on the final time qualifier by five milliseconds, and 13th-place Kentucky slipped in ahead of them for the Championships by placing third in their heat for an automatic qualifier.
Stephen Jones ran the 5000m after advancing to the Championships in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday night. The junior finished in 14:42.82 and was 33rd.
"We're not done yet," Woods continued. "Our goals are still in front of us for the national championships, and we have a chance to do some very special things. There were a lot of high notes this weekend that we can take to Austin with us."
State now turns to the NCAA Championships, which will be held on the campus of the University of Texas on June 5-8. Flynn will be joined by high jumper Logan Boss, javelin thrower Sarah Blake and 800m runner Alon Lewis on the women's side.
MSU's men advanced Dejon Devroe (800m), Rasheed Tatham (400m hurdles) and Jones in the track events. The Bulldog javelin trio of Anderson Peters, Tyriq Horsford and Curtis Thompson will also compete in Austin. Peters is looking to become just the third Bulldog to win consecutive NCAA titles. Thompson won the national championship in 2016.
