STARKVILLE – Success on the tennis courts, as well as in the classroom, has been a hallmark of Nuno Borges' Mississippi State men's tennis career.
The senior added to his lengthy résumé by being named Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second straight year on Thursday, moving him into contention for Academic All-America honors in June. In 2018, Borges earned Second Team Academic All-America honors, and is looking to achieve that or better to close out his collegiate career.
In the classroom, the two-time SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year holds a sparkling 3.90 cumulative GPA after pacing the Bulldogs with a 4.0 this spring. The Maia, Porto, Portugal, product is slated to complete his bachelor's degree in kinesiology with a concentration in clinical exercise physiology in the fall.
On the court, Borges has automatically qualified for both the 2019 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, earning top-5 national seeds in both draws for the second year in a row. The three-time SEC Player of the Year Borges, ranked first nationally, will compete as the No. 1 singles seed, while he and Strahinja Rakic will team up as the No. 3 overall doubles seed. Draws for both tournaments will be released prior to the start of the championships in Orlando on May 20.
Borges is entering the NCAA Championships riding a career-long 26-match winning streak in singles and became, this season, the first Bulldog to finish a dual-match season unbeaten (25-0), all at the No. 1 position. Next week will mark Borges' third straight appearance in NCAA Singles, with all three coming as an automatic qualifier. He has reached the semifinals each of the last two years.
In doubles, Borges and Rakic have picked up right where they left off from their NCAA Doubles quarterfinal run a year ago, holding a 21-10 overall mark in 2018-19. This spring, the duo has been just as impressive, anchoring the No. 1 position with a 16-7 ledger that includes a 9-2 mark in SEC play. Together, Borges and Rakic hold the most wins by a doubles pair in program history with 55.
Both Borges and Rakic earned First Team All-SEC honors for the second year in a row after being the top-ranked doubles tandem in the conference and, due to their high NCAA seedings, will earn All-America honors for the second straight year as well.
