Listen: "Thunder and Lightning" Episode of "The John Cohen Podcast"

by Bill Martin, Associate Athletic Director/Communications
STARKVILLE – Will Clark and Rafael Palmeiro, the iconic Mississippi State baseball legends known as "Thunder and Lightning," are the newest guests of "The John Cohen Podcast." The "Thunder and Lightning" episode can be heard now on MSU's Apple Podcast site and on the Bulldogs' SoundCloud page at soundcloud.com/hailstate.
Two iconic statues honoring Clark and Palmeiro are on display in front of the new Dudy Noble Field. Clark, known as "Thunder," was a two-time All-American, an Olympian, the 1985 Golden Spikes Award winner and the 1985 SEC Male Athlete of the Year. A member of the inaugural College Baseball Hall of Fame class in 2006, Clark celebrated a 15-year career in Major League Baseball that included six All-Star selections, the 1991 Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards and a career .303 batting average.
Clark's interview with Cohen discusses how he still steps into the batting cages and hits in his role as a special instructor with the San Francisco Giants, in addition to a conversation about new Dudy Noble Field.
"The facility is absolutely first class," Clark said. "You don't have facilities on the Major League level that are this good. When you see the video stuff, the batting cages, the player's lounge and the locker rooms, it is first class all the way around."
Known as "Lightning," Palmeiro was a three-time All-American and two-time All-SEC performer. The first Triple Crown winner in SEC history, he was inducted into College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009. Palmeiro is one of just six Major League players to collect 3,000 hits and 500 home runs in a career. He boasted 10 MLB seasons with 100-plus RBIs and 35-plus home runs during his career.
In the in-depth Cohen interview, Palmeiro reflects on becoming the first Triple Crown winner in SEC history and that record being followed by Brent Rooker.
"That is special," Palmeiro said. "Playing with Will (Clark) on the same team, he could have won it too. That year his numbers were identical to mine. With the amount of great players that have come through the SEC in the last 70 years to have only two guys do it and at Mississippi State, we will see when it happens again."
"The John Cohen Podcast" gives listeners unique insight, stories and interviews with successful sports standouts, business leaders and members of the Mississippi State community from the desk of Director of Athletics John Cohen.
