STARKVILLE – College football's most feared edge defender during the last two seasons, Montez Sweat is among 23 players who will attend the 2019 NFL Draft in Nashville, Tennessee, on April 25, it was announced Tuesday during NFL Network's "Path to the Draft" program.
A consensus projected first-round draft pick, Mississippi State's Sweat turned heads at the NFL's annual scouting combine on March 4. At 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, Sweat was clocked at 4.41 seconds in the 40-yard dash, a modern record by a defensive lineman. He was faster than all but two of 23 running backs who ran the 40 and he was 0.12 seconds faster than Jadeveon Clowney's time at the 2014 combine.
Sweat also finished fourth among edge players in the broad jump (11 feet, 2 inches) and three-cone drill (7 seconds flat) and was sixth in the vertical jump (36 inches).
ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has Sweat projected as the No. 2 defensive end in the draft and the No. 8 player overall in his latest mock draft.
Sweat had 11.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss last season after posting an SEC-best 10.5 sacks and 15 tackles for loss in 2017. He earned back-to-back first-team All-SEC honors and first-team All-America honors by the FWAA and Sporting News in 2018. His 22 career sacks were the second most among Power 5 players across the last two seasons.
Heading into the 2019 NFL Draft on April 25-27, MSU aims to break the school record for most players selected in a single NFL Draft (six in 1995).
