BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mississippi State women's golf team reached the SEC Championship quarterfinals for the first time in program history at the Greystone Golf Club in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday.
Battling the harsh weather was no easy task, but the Bulldogs persevered to advance to match play where they were eliminated by No. 11 South Carolina.
"This young team accomplished a great deal in this marathon week," said head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm. "The SEC golf programs are among the most elite, just like all other sports. We played in good weather and played in rain, gusty winds, and 42 degrees. The golf course was saturated."
Freshman Hannah Levi carded a trio of birdies which helped her to a half-point in her match against reigning All-SEC Scholar Athlete and No. 25 Lois Go.
Aubree Jones made the turn at one up and had birdies on Nos. 13 and 16, but No.11 Emily Price from South Carolina matched those birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to win two-up.
Ela Grimwood hung in her match, with birdies on Nos. 2, 6, 11 and 13 but ultimately lost two-down to South Carolina's Anita Uwadia.
Lauren Miller battled until she was dormie on the 17th, two-down to South Carolina's Ana Palaez, and Blair Stockett lost in a four and three score to her opponent Marion Veysseyre.
"They hung in there with a lot of fight," said Brown-Lemm. "In most of our matches, we maintained an all-square standing, but rarely held a lead, which led to a lot of competitive matches going to 17 or 18-holes but just shy of transferring to a match win. We showed maturity and growth making the cut to match play, it was a big goal for this squad. Now we can focus our attention on the NCAA Regional assignment and the National Championship."
The Bulldogs will await their fate as the NCAA selection show will be live broadcasted on the Golf Channel on April 24th.
